Bibhu Mohapatra is a designer who deftly manipulates fur, fabric and designs into jaw dropping elegance.
New York based Mohapatra began working for J Mendel, Parisien furrier extraordinare. Bibhu travelled to Paris to work with Mendel’s father, Jacques, who taught Bibhu the intricacies of working with fur.
In 2009 Mahapatra launched his first solo collection, notably his main focus was evening gowns and furs. Bibhu’s Spring 2015 Collection had been spinning around in his mind for a couple of years but despite a vague nautical direction, the full definition was somewhat incomplete.
Until two years ago when Bibhu Mohapatra sailed transatlantic for seven days on The Queen Mary, with his partner, spotty internet, and a library littered with random yet fascinating titles. His book of choice was a biography on Nancy Cunard, heiress to the Cunard shipping line, an adventurous woman who’s spirit inspired Bibhu. Cunard, along with the transatlantic voyage, helped to seamlessly create and define Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring 2015 Collection.
The Spring 2015 Collection offers an interesting element of fur, an element notably absent from most designers when presenting that season. Bibhu’s mastery in working with fur to make it pretty, fun and light are a testimony to his years learning the trade. Saks Fifth Avenue carries his line, a must!
His cuts and tailoring are masterfully appreciative of the female body, slipping into one of his dresses is like being luxuriously cucooned in the finest fabrics perfectly molded onto your body. It is truly an experience better than chocolate!
Evening gowns with spiralgraph-esque patterns cascading down the skirt, a pattern Bibhu created himself. But if evening gowns are not currently part of your wardrobe, he has extended his creations to cigarette pants and organza flanked crop tops in the same swirly movement.
Furs in a perfect pink, manipulated into looking like polyantha roses (perfect tiny super fragrant roses) set on buttery soft leather in that same exact perfect pink.
Beautiful beading can be found throughout the collection, and Bibhu told me the secret to it’s decadence.
He uses a beader who relocated to India from Paris, and is also the Balenciaga beader. The detailed work speaks for itself!
reversecommuter was fortunate enough to be invited to play dress up in this delicious little number I dubbed ‘naughty Mrs. Cleaver goes on safari’ (much to the amusement of Bibhu!). The tight fitting bodice is enveloped with a satin filled skirt that playfully offers the most decadent of details – pockets! The safari reference comes from an unexpected frivolity on the back of the dress, two trench styled flaps that sit on the shoulder blades – SO FUN!
Silly sidebar moment – I told Bibhu I was mildly obsessed with look #10 from his NYFW and he immediately pulled this dress. Apparently we share an obsession!
The Collection is fun, as is the designer. He is grateful to where he is at this exact moment, and wants to grow “with baby steps, surround himself with good people and focus on his passion.” His energy, confidence and warmth are intoxicating, almost as much as his clothing.
