Fashion & Finance Friday

Greetings fabulous Friday!  Love it when you get here so quickly!

Louis Boston, only bastion of fashion in the city of Boston, just announced that after 85 years and three generations of Greenberg leadership, will close it’s doors July 2015.

reversecommuter is heart broken.

Debi Greenberg has an incredible eye for talent within the fashion world.  Boston was beyond lucky to have her store situated here, as were the customers – and yes, no huge surprise she is a bit of a fashion industry icon for reversecommuter!

deb

She single handedly broke the city’s reputation as being somewhat fashion challenged.  Whatever will up and coming talents do when hoping to find a buyer with a trained eye and natural instinct for incredible fashion?

psme

Just ask Jason Wu, Proenza Schouler and Jonathan Simkhai what Debi and Louis Boston did for their careers when first launching their lines.

Today is a really bleak day for Boston fashion.

What do Palm Beach and Minnesota have in common in April?  Certainly not weather.  Answer: Lily Pulitzer is partnering up with Target for a 250 piece collection of clothing and housewares, dropping April 19.

Would the grand lady of pink & green palm tree shifts be excited about this?  reverse commuter thinks not.

10 years and counting – adidas by Stella McCartney Spring 2015 will be a big gorgeous birthday of loveliness (yes, I am excited!).

Look at what this brilliant British rock royalty designer does to workout wear!

Start saving those pennies because the better the outfit the harder you workout – that is my purchasing excuse and please don’t try to put holes in it!  Click here on January 15th to get the new collection!

Get outside, ignore the weather and enjoy the weekend!  Winter boots, skinny jeans, thick turtleneck sweater and a camel coat – walk into your favorite brunch spot, order a flute of pink champagne and pretend it is summer!

Jonathan Simkhai, Sigh……

This is truly where the magic happens!

It is no secret how much reversecommuter LOVES Jonathan Simkhai, designer and designs, since being introduced to him through W Boston and Louis Boston last spring.  Click here for a refresher.

Jonathan Simkhai designs clothing that is fun, fashion forward, wearable – as in everyday gorgeousness even when schlepping children around, running errands and any other daily operation that normally elicits groans!  His pieces are easily added to a basic wardrobe to create a polished, fashionable effect with very little energy.

His studio is in the CFDA Fashion Incubator Studios, from 2012-2014.

Guess who got to visit and take a few pics?

JS4

What a trip to go inside the studio, small and intense, and see the inner machinations of the line.  There was a huge Mac screen on a back table, swatches and rolls of fabric littered throughout, even an old school Butterick pattern book (loved seeing that, it was like a little peek into the creative process in the beginning of his career!).

They even showed me some of the Spring Collection and the knitwear is BEYOND!!!!!!!!!!  reversecommuter feels like a knitwit for not grabbing a certain skirt and white cropped sweater – might have to make a call later this morning….

Proenza Schouler!

Fashion & Finance Friday is being interrupted this week….because last night I met Proenza Schouler!

And yes, both Jack and Lazaro are as handsome and charming and warm as is the rumor – in fact maybe more so.

PSME

Lararo told a FANTASTIC story about how as a college student, he was on the same plane as Anna Wintour (she at the very front of the plane, he at the very back).  He wrote her a note on a cocktail napkin, walked passed the “annoying curtains”, slipped the napkin under her drink and walked back to his seat.  Two weeks later Michael Kors called to offer him an internship, based on the recommendation of Anna Wintour who loved his ballsy move.  BEST FASHION STORY EVER!!

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez (aka Proenza Schouler) spoke at the ICA Boston, in an intimate surrounding that even allowed a Q&A.  They spoke about their inspiration and love of contemporary art.  How their collections begin with a mood then follows the designing and fabrics – most of which they create at their mills in Italy.

Proenza Schouler is known for their materials as well as their CRAZY good designs.  They said that what was very exciting was that “materiality can be unlimitedly pushed”.

PS1

reversecommuter asked what piece the boys would suggest for the Proenza Schouler girl in the ‘burbs.

icaThey loved my question (in fact McCollough asked Hernandez to answer it as he thought it was a little too good a question!).  Their answer was the PS1 bag.  (fyi PS in PS1 doesn’t necessarily stand for the obvious Proenza Schouler.  Asked last night the designing duo suggested it might even stand for Public School!)  They said the bag was created as the anti-It bag, ironic as it is SUCH an IT Bag!  The true dichotomy in their designs is to be contemporary yet to create a classic.  Clearly the PS1 answers that call.  Click here to get yours!

After the ICA Boston event, Louis Boston held a private reception for Proenza Schouler.  More on that in an upcoming posting!

Gorgeousness Abounds!

reversecommuter has never been much of a secret keeper…

so it really should not come as much of a surprise that I HEART CFDA designer Jonathan Simkhai and his gorgeous designs too! (click here for a gentle reminder). I was lucky enough to meet him at a trunk show hosted by W Boston and LOUIS Boston (best store ever, truly). The owner and fashion clairvoyant extraordinaire, Debi Greenberg, was one of the original store’s to write an order with Jonathan. Thank You DG!

Fall 2013 does not change the level of love…

JS1

well maybe it has increased just a smidge!

JS2

Patterned grids of loveliness, sweaters offering contrasting classics, leather, quilted leather, leather & pony hair shirts (OHEMGEEEEE!), skirts that deliver fantasy waists, yellows and blues and blacks, dresses that ooze with the near impossible mix of sex appeal and class.

Fashion & Finance Friday!

Nothing in the world better than a sunny, blue skied Friday!

Unless you are the CEO of J C Penny, then George Soros buying 7.9% of the beaten up retailer totally trumps the sunshine!  George’s investment caused an impressive 7% increase in J C Penny’s stock price last night – Joe Fresh I am sure was doing a happy dance too!  Click here for more on J C Penny.

Unknown-2

Louis Boston’s leader extraordinaire Murray Pearlstein passed away this week.  Prior to the UBER talented Debi Greenberg leading the helm, it was her father that truly built Louis Boston into the iconic fashion retailer it is today (click here to read about reversecommuter’s girl & style crush).  Here is Debi with Jason Wu – by the way, he recognizes her as one of the first real breaks he got in fashion!

dsc_01332

Murray was the second generation to run Louis Boston, but he was a trailblazer who dictated how fashion and retail should be.  He went to Italy, he worked with designers, he had designers work for him in house (Joseph Aboud for example) and Debi grew up under an exceptional eye for fashion.   Boston is grateful, as is the fashion world.
