Sensational Simkhai at Saks!

Saks Fifth Avenue hosted the ridiculously fabulous Jonathan Simkhai for a day of style, swings and seriously decadent designer wear.

‚Äčreversecommuter has been consistent in my adoration and appreciation for the design and talent of Jonathan Simkhai

Seriously, take a tour through the past four years of this blog and count the numerous mentions of one of my absolute favorite designers!

Fun story about the white lace top I am wearing – Saks special ordered three of these for the event, and all three were snapped up before 2pm yesterday, in fact we were all trying them on at the same time, three dressing rooms in a row!

Yesterday’s Saks event was tremendous and proves that Jonathan Simkhai is a designer that knows what his clients desire.  Despite his crazy busy schedule, international clientele and mind-boggling success – he danced with Gigi & Kendal for Vogue for Pete’s Sake, he was absolutely in the moment in Boston.

Jonathan was literally running between jam packed dressing rooms yesterday, meeting and greeting his clients as well as offering customized one on one alterations and suggestions.  #fashionswoon!ūüíē

He suggested I try this dress on – so obviously I did!

Sadly it was too big but perhaps a revisit may occur if an appropriate event pops up on the calendar – I’m thinking of a gala in June…or maybe this white lace and cotton full length dress which I absolutely covet (despite my goofy face in this pic!).

The clothes are decadent, feminine and yet strong at the same time.  Fancy lace detail paired with chambray denim or cotton that allows the client to interpret the way she wants to wear the piece – flip flops, sandals or Stillettos, casual patio lunch or dreamy date night.  This is the attribute that makes Jonathan Simkhai a favorite designer.  This red dress will be a perfect summer piece and I can pair it with gold flat sandals or a heel.  Dressed up or down, a Simkhai piece makes you walk just that little bit taller & happier!

The more I learn about the man Jonathan Simkhai and his incredibly talented, crazy intelligent team the more I own the validity of my four year & counting style crush.ūüíē

Getting Public School’d

Public School was in Boston October 20th!  (Obviously I had to take a picture of the perfectly timed school bus sitting outside the W Hotel during the Public School party.)

img_7085

The CFDA 2013 winning design duo extraordinaire, were at Saks Fifth Avenue for a q&a session, followed by a private party for Public School held at the  W.

ps_ss16_9_2048x2048

The evening allowed Boston fashion fans to meet, ask questions, and even party late late late into the night with these incredibly talented and mad friendly designers.

img_7081

Models rotated looks from the current and upcoming collections while the crowd posed, clinked glasses, danced and happily hung out with Dao Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne Рor at least that is how reversecommuter did it!

The tartan biased cut skirt (think flannel tartan shirt tied sloppily at the waist and dangling down at various angles) was an absolute fave. ¬†Public School’s current FW’16 collection offers this in a darker tartan, and the upcoming Spring ’17¬†collection it will be in black and white.

img_7084

Nothing better than a skirt designed to work with boots and a t-shirt or elevated with ankle boots and a leather top. ¬†The beauty of Public School’s designs is that they can absolutely be worn every single day in the ‘burbs. ¬†Ironic that when the children go to school the moms can wear Public School!

Public School‘s Fall 2016 magenta biker jacket better be in Santa’s sack for this blogger, it is THAT good a statement piece. ¬†This brilliant jacket will make any grey winter day seem a little blast of tropical happiness blew in!

Public School is also launching the  Fitbit Alta collection, offering two sleek and stylish  models that will make capturing those alluring 10,000 steps even more of an accomplishment Рever notice how obsessive a behavior that can be?!

img_7082

reversecommuter has been a fan of this design duo for a while, the CFDA brought them to my attention, their designs have continued to capture my attention, and Maxwell Osborne’s Black Lives Matter letter to W Magazine fully delivered my loyalty.

ps my phone case is super cute (a Chanel perfume bottle shape with pink sparkles floating on the back – however my blurry pictures confirm it is infringing upon the camera lens – time to replace…

NYFW SS 2017 – Jonathan Simkhai

I went, I saw, I conquered.  NYFW Spring Summer 2017 was my first.  Attending NYFW was one of my primary goals when I started reversecommuter.com.  To know me is to know that setting and achieving my goals is my raison d’√™tre.

fullsizerender-4

Appropriately Jonathan Simkhai‘s show was my first.  He is one of my absolute favorite designers, and being personally invited to his show was a major high point not quickly forgotten.fullsizerender-1The show was packed with instagram’s hotshots, Olivia Palermo, Ashley Graeme, Jamie Chung, Kylie Jenner, Joe Zee and Brad Goreski to name just a few.  Jonathan Simkhai has quickly skyrocketed to super designer stardom, and so very deservingly.

unknown-10

This show was inspired by the Watts Towers in LA, an architectural creation of 17 interconnected structures built with garbage over 34 years – there are still some brand identifying labels to be seen on pop bottles!

unknown-4

This collection delivered a more polished version of his trademark cutout silhouettes, denim and Italian lace designs.

unknown-7

SS17 collection’s ivory, silks, chiffons, satins, navy blues (yup, my absolute fave), soft baby blue chambrays and the textures, ruffles and tears made the n models’  movement beyond spectacular.

unknown-8

The casting was exact with models in light, natural makeup, straight hair loose with undone unexpected braids scattered about.

unknown-2

Jonathan Simkhai‘s line is found in Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Intermix, Saks Fifth Avenue and at www.jonathansimkhai.com.  This scattering of high end retailers is all in walking distance in NYC.

jscamel

Trust me, I was searching for these gorg camel & navy pieces while attending NYFW and marched for miles to find them.  Sadly they haven’t even been delivered yet and so reversecommuter is attempting fashion patience – so not my strong point!

unknown-9

This might seem like a rather high end selection of retailers but his price point in comparison to his creations is kind to the fashion consumer.  It is rare to find a talent this rich offering his designs with a price tag we can all reach.

unknown-5

This SS2017 collection is all about layering and everyday luxury.

unknown-6

In case you are wondering these are my absolute favorite two looks from the runway show.

PS.

I was also invited to his After Party at a nightclub called The Blond.

I mean, how could I not go?!

Transatlantic Transcendence!

Bibhu Mohapatra is a designer who deftly manipulates fur, fabric and designs into jaw dropping elegance.

bibhu2

New York based Mohapatra began working for J Mendel, Parisien furrier extraordinare. ¬†Bibhu travelled to¬†Paris to¬†work with Mendel’s father, Jacques, who taught Bibhu the intricacies of working with fur.

_LKV3633

In 2009 Mahapatra launched his first solo collection, notably his main focus was evening gowns and furs. ¬†Bibhu’s Spring 2015¬†Collection had been spinning around in his mind for a couple of years but despite a vague¬†nautical direction, the full definition was somewhat¬†incomplete.

images-1

Until two years ago when Bibhu Mohapatra sailed transatlantic for seven days¬†on The Queen Mary, with his partner, spotty internet, ¬†and a library littered with random yet fascinating titles. ¬†His book of choice was a biography on Nancy Cunard, heiress to the Cunard shipping line, ¬†an adventurous woman who’s spirit inspired Bibhu. ¬† Cunard, along with the transatlantic voyage, helped to seamlessly create and define Bibhu Mohapatra’s¬†Spring 2015 Collection.

_LKV3689

The Spring 2015 Collection offers an interesting element of fur, an element notably absent from most designers when presenting¬†that season. ¬†Bibhu’s mastery in working with fur to make it pretty, fun and light are a testimony to his years learning the trade. ¬†Saks Fifth Avenue carries his line, a must!

_LKV3572

His cuts and tailoring are masterfully appreciative of the female body, slipping into one of his dresses is like being luxuriously cucooned in the finest fabrics perfectly molded onto your body.  It is truly an experience better than chocolate!

_LKV3668

Evening gowns with spiralgraph-esque patterns cascading down the skirt, a pattern Bibhu created himself.  But if evening gowns are not currently part of your wardrobe, he has extended his creations to cigarette pants and organza flanked crop tops in the same swirly  movement.

bibhu3

Furs in a perfect pink, manipulated into looking like polyantha roses (perfect tiny super fragrant roses) set on buttery soft leather in that same exact perfect pink.

_LKV3529

Beautiful beading can be found throughout the collection, and Bibhu told me the secret to it’s decadence.

Bibhu1

He uses a beader who relocated to India from Paris, and is also the Balenciaga beader.  The detailed work speaks for itself!

photo 2-2

reversecommuter was fortunate enough to be invited to play dress up¬†in¬†this delicious little number I dubbed ‘naughty Mrs. Cleaver goes on safari’ (much to the amusement of Bibhu!). ¬†The tight fitting bodice is enveloped with a satin filled skirt that playfully offers the most decadent of details – pockets! ¬†The safari reference comes from an unexpected frivolity on the back of the dress, two trench styled flaps that sit on the shoulder blades – SO FUN!

Silly sidebar moment РI told Bibhu I was mildly obsessed with look #10 from his NYFW and he immediately pulled this dress.  Apparently we share an obsession!

photo 1-2

The Collection is fun, as is the designer. ¬†He is grateful to where he is at this exact moment, and wants to grow “with baby steps, surround himself with good people and focus on his passion.” ¬†His energy, confidence and warmth are intoxicating, almost as much as his clothing.

Sandal Overload!

Indecisiveness is not necessarily a bad trait to have…

p4

Saks Fifth Avenue’s ridiculously helpful Locator service went a little bit crazy in the search for my sandals (which I almost returned after a friend of mine was wearing the same ones at a party this past weekend – THE HORROR!!!!!!!!!!!)

p3

Imagine my surprise when Saks Locator sent me an email announcing they had found my size in both the blue and the tan! ¬†Decisions Decisions…

p2

It gets worse…Saks also found them in black for me.

Fuzzy Money Shoes

Hudson’s Bay Co. aka the proud new owner of Saks, (click here to read more) is a Canadian institution that dates back to the fur trapping early settler days of 1670. The striped blanket that started it all is actually called a point blanket. Native Canadians would trade beaver and other fur pelts for the point blanket as it was easier to sew – NOT exactly a fair trade!20130917-121104.jpg

Now you can own a little piece of Canadian history on your feet – literally – with Jack Purcell high or low tops that have a chunk of the ubiquitous blankie sewn on them!

Fashion & Finance Friday

Well HELLO Friday!

What is up with the cash rich Canadians?  First Hudson Bay Co. scoops up Saks Fifth Avenue for an eye-popping $2.4 BILLION, now the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board is buying Neiman Marcus for an illuminating $6 BILLION.  That is a lot of loonies and toonies ($1 & $2 Canadian dollar coins)!

LuluLemon’s stock is falling down, (pity the suburban masses don’t take note and stop wearing it daily…). ¬†Apparently recalling Luon pants (the label’s bread and butter item), running the company without a CEO and the over-expansion of retail shops (201 stores), is having a negative impact on projected growth. ¬†shocker.

NYFW is done. ¬†What a whirlwind of fabulousness and some notsofabulousness…uh, Alexander Wang are you too thinly spread to design? ¬†Parental Advisory shirts, really?

WAN_1819.450x675

My heart belongs to Proenza Schouler’s Spring line up. ¬†Texture, cut, shape, ease, buttery suede, rich color palate, classic lines, absolute deliciousness for the wardrobe! ¬†(photos courtesy of Style.com – thank you Tim Blanks!)
