Fashion & Finance Friday!

Thank you NOLA, Friday came quicker this week!

Pipedreams.  Piperlime, an online boutique owned by Gap Inc. will be shut down by the end of February.  This is a classic case of why retailers should not try to be all things to all people.  Piperlime launched in 2006 and quickly became a favorite shoe site.  The sales figures mistakenly convinced Gap to expand Piperlime into an everything-kind of website increasing inventory to include shoes, clothes, accessories etc. as a direct competitor to Zappos.com.

Gap decided to open a bricks and mortar Piper lime in Soho September 2012.  reversecommuter was there in person, as was Rachel Zoe who was hosting a NYFW event.

DSC_0165

Piperlime has been big in seeking out celebrity spokespersons, but apparently not big in sales.  Piperlime was responsible for a whopping 1% of Gap’s jaw-dropping $16 BILLION in annual sales.  Poor little Piperlime is no more, which should be viewed as great news for smaller high fashion online operations.

Not Well Suited.  Jones New York, the brand that represented suits for women since 1970, is closing down operations.

Unknown

Workwear for women is now a redefined industry that allows interpretation, style and separates to form the outfits in boardrooms.  reversecommuter was the proud owner of a few JNY suits during my career as a stockbroker, usually in hot pink, navy, red and black. And yes, there was a rotation of suiting that reflected the market!

Unknown-1

Alas, present day Jones New York is more Ally McBeal than Amal Clooney, clearly that just wasn’t working.

Just for giggles choose the shorter the hemline, ignore the snow drifts and own those pumps…while raising the champagne flute to the PATS on Superbowl Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fashion & Finance Friday!

Bring on the LOOOOOONG Choco-Bunny Weekend!

“It’s good to have goals.” – One of reversecommuter’s favorite mantras, and it appears the same can be said for The Gap Inc.  in regards to China.  Gap has 81 stores in China and is planning on adding 30 more shops this year.  Gap Inc. will probably consider introducing additional Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta stores into China in the next 2 years.

Unknown-4

The Gap wants to reach $1BILLION in sales in China by 2017.  How do you say “Khaki’s Everywhere” in Mandarin?

reversecommuter mini-rant (* DIRECT bi-product of being cooped inside since Sunday with sick stomach flu children – apologies!)

The world’s total clothing spenditure is $1.4 Trillion.  If Gap Inc. hits $1 Billion by 2017, reversecommuter shudders to think how very similar everyone’s outfits will be.  At the risk of ranting (on a Fashion & Finance Friday no less!), fashion is not about looking like everyone else, nor is it about mass producing inexpensive, poor quality clothing – that puts garment workers in developing countries at risk.

King Karl once again proves his regal worthiness.

Unknown-2

Despite the shared opinion of reversecommuter and Karl Lagerfeld (um, how much fun was that sentence to write?!?!?), it seems as though the fashion world’s love of all things workout-y is expanding.  How is it that the suburban masses of yoga pant uniformed housewives are influencing Paris, Milan, New York and London?!?!?!  net-a-porter is rumored to be expanding the website into workout wear, Tory Burch is about to launch her workout line, and Lululemon is about to launch their “&Go” line of everyday clothing.

reversecommuter mini-rant Part II (* DIRECT bi-product of being cooped inside since Sunday with sick stomach flu children – apologies!)

Tory Burch being “influenced” by recognizing a lot of women wear their gym clothes all day makes reversecommuter once again ask “how is she considered a leading designer in fashion?”.  And if designers waive the white flag and surrender their creativity based on the bored masses in their yoga pants and unkept ponytails, this era will be more horrific than the 80’s shoulder pad debacle.

Unknown-3

reversecommuter appreciates gorgeous, stylish workout clothing probably more than most, perfect example is this adidas by Stella McCartney top I just nabbed on net-a-porter.com, but I will be wearing it to work out in, and then I will shower, float around on my endorphin high and change into other clothes!

Easter Weekend is upon us, get ready for happy, giggly children, pastel outfits, chocolate bunnies, egg hunts, family time, sugar highs, and Easter bonnet parades (my absolute favorite Bill Cunningham spread in the New York Times Fashion section of all year!!!!).

Dress up, smile for all you have and add some champs to that glass of o.j. at Easter Brunch!

Cropped What?!

crop1

Memo to designers – Not all women’s stomachs are created equal.

crop3

Some are in their early twenties and have washboard six packs. Others are a teeny bit older and have had some babies, and are now the proud owners of tummy-Shar-Peis.

crop8

Hence the Spring fashion conundrum concerning crop tops & the need for Fashion Translation!

crop2

There are some wondrous collections out this spring, most of which are offering crop tops. What’s the owner of a muffin top to do?

crop10

Option One – the layered look.  This is a great option for Spring (and almost Spring), as layering is key to survival when it is freezing in the morning then scorching in the afternoon.

crop7

Wear a longer tee short or blouse underneath the crop. But don’t tuck!

Option Two –  Tune in tomorrow……  🙂

$12 Pants & Alexander McQueen

No lie.  $12 H&M pants.

Topped with my current favorite white button down, a thick collared Alexander McQueen.

In a salute to Sharon Stone, the queen of High/Low Fashion – at the 1996 Oscar’s she wore a black Gap turtleneck with a Valentino skirt, and at the 1998 Oscar’s she donned a Vera Wang skirt and a Gap button down (that she borrowed from her husband’s closet!!).

Unknown-1 Unknown-2

Kind of empowering to mix it up and respect the budget too!

Fashion & Finance Friday!

Looooooooong Weekends are the BEST!

Lots of fantastic numbers being reported this week!  Gap Inc leads the way with 42.9% Q1 growth in profit – that is a lot of t-shirts (such good basic tees!).

Unknown-1

Armani enjoyed another stellar year, announcing 20% profit gain for 2012.  Apparently Giorgio is going to be putting some of that right back into his company in the form of a new boutique in Cannes.  Guess the pop up was convincingly profitable!

Unknown-2

Somebody is interested in buying Sak’s…or atleast that is the rumor on the street and it is so convincing that the stock is up 20% in the past two days!  Sak’s Fifth Avenue just announced it’s Q1 income as 20 MILLION – so whoever is potentially shopping around will obviously have deep pockets!

Enjoy the Loooooooooong Weekend – slap on a party outfit, get a blow out and feel like the  fierce fabulous fashionable creature you are meant to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fashion & Finance Friday!

Greetings & Salutations FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

VB6

Fall trends that have been sashaying down runways from NYC to Milan include leather –  and LOTS of it – as exhibited by Veronica Beard’s Fall Collection (click the blue to see more), capes (how super hero-ish!) and florals (yup, even into fall).  So that means that clever fashion savvy shoppers now know what makes a smart buy!

Peek-a-Boo LuLu!

Lulu Lemon had an unfortunate yoga pant transparency issue earlier this week – and it has cost the company a bundle in stock value!  Lulu’s CEO, Christine Day told Bloomberg News that the only way to confirm the see-thru quality was for customers to bend over – the transparency issue was only when customers’ stretched in them.  Click the blue to go to lululemon.com.

photolululemoncropped2_620x350

Which makes reversecommuter point out the obvious – THEY ARE YOGA PANTS, THERE IS GOING TO BE ALOT OF STRETCHING!!!!!!  Unless of course the customer is wearing them all day long and not doing yoga -which is another travesty all together!

Q4 Earnings have started rolling in (reversecommuter LOVES this time of year!!) and the news is pretty good so far – NIKE, Tiffany’s, Hermes, Sak’s, The Gap have all reported an increase in earnings despite a difficult holiday period and wacky winter weather.

Enjoy the weekend – mix your patterns just for giggles and drink some champs too!

Fashion & Finance Friday!

Happy First Friday of 2013!

The Gap has purchased Intermix for $130 MILLION!  Yes, The Gap. Yes, Intermix.  Seriously.

gap-logo

Intermix bagan in 1996 in Manhattan, and now has stores in 11 states, and one in Toronto, Canada.  Intermix carries fabulous gorgeous lines such as DVF, Chloe, Yigal Azrouël, Mulberry, Jimmy Choo, Stella McCartney, and Rag & Bone.  The Gap is worth $15 BILLION and looking to redefine itself.  reversecommuter says “BRILLIANT MOVE!”

tiffany3

Tiffany & Co. and Elsa Peretti are still in love, $47.3 MILLION kinda love.  The Italian designer and the blue box jeweler have extended their relationship with an extended deal. Elsa’s designs are responsible for 10% of Tiff’s annual sales.

Brown Santa!

Brown Santa!

Yesterday was a BIG day for Brown Santa (click here to read about my adoration of Brown Santa).  January 3rd is now known as “National Returns Day”.  UPS was expecting more than 500,000 returns to be picked up and processed yesterday, with an impressive 2 MILLION returns this week.  So much for regifting!

Have  a fashionable & fun weekend!
