Redefining the Suburban Mommy Uniform

Sunday’s Boston Globe had a “must read” (literally their words describing the piece on the website)…

Written by reversecommuter.  Click here to read the column!

The quick & dirty summary is that a suburban mom (or an urban one), needs only 6 pieces to form a wardrobe.

The most exciting part of this article is that more will follow, with my new gig as guest fashion columnist for the Boston Globe.  Pretty psyched!

Fashion & Finance Friday!

Bring on the LOOOOOONG Choco-Bunny Weekend!

“It’s good to have goals.” – One of reversecommuter’s favorite mantras, and it appears the same can be said for The Gap Inc.  in regards to China.  Gap has 81 stores in China and is planning on adding 30 more shops this year.  Gap Inc. will probably consider introducing additional Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta stores into China in the next 2 years.

Unknown-4

The Gap wants to reach $1BILLION in sales in China by 2017.  How do you say “Khaki’s Everywhere” in Mandarin?

The world’s total clothing spenditure is $1.4 Trillion.  If Gap Inc. hits $1 Billion by 2017, reversecommuter shudders to think how very similar everyone’s outfits will be.  At the risk of ranting (on a Fashion & Finance Friday no less!), fashion is not about looking like everyone else, nor is it about mass producing inexpensive, poor quality clothing – that puts garment workers in developing countries at risk.

King Karl once again proves his regal worthiness.

Despite the shared opinion of reversecommuter and Karl Lagerfeld (um, how much fun was that sentence to write?!?!?), it seems as though the fashion world’s love of all things workout-y is expanding.  How is it that the suburban masses of yoga pant uniformed housewives are influencing Paris, Milan, New York and London?!?!?!  net-a-porter is rumored to be expanding the website into workout wear, Tory Burch is about to launch her workout line, and Lululemon is about to launch their “&Go” line of everyday clothing.

Tory Burch being “influenced” by recognizing a lot of women wear their gym clothes all day makes reversecommuter once again ask “how is she considered a leading designer in fashion?”.  And if designers waive the white flag and surrender their creativity based on the bored masses in their yoga pants and unkept ponytails, this era will be more horrific than the 80’s shoulder pad debacle.

reversecommuter appreciates gorgeous, stylish workout clothing probably more than most, perfect example is this adidas by Stella McCartney top I just nabbed on net-a-porter.com, but I will be wearing it to work out in, and then I will shower, float around on my endorphin high and change into other clothes!

Easter Weekend is upon us, get ready for happy, giggly children, pastel outfits, chocolate bunnies, egg hunts, family time, sugar highs, and Easter bonnet parades (my absolute favorite Bill Cunningham spread in the New York Times Fashion section of all year!!!!).

Dress up, smile for all you have and add some champs to that glass of o.j. at Easter Brunch!

HEAT WAVE FRIDAY!!!!!!!  Break out that maxi and keep cool!

Macy’s is guilty of some self-love!  The retailer is investing over $400 MILLION into the NYC flagship.  The renovation is divided into 4 phases, and will add over 100,000 square feet bring the total shop size to 1.2 MILLION square feet which covers over ten levels of shopping floors between now and Fall 2015.  Plans include building the LARGEST shoe department of 39,000 square feet – capable of holding 300,000 pairs of shoes!!!!!!!  Clearly Macy’s takes it’s existing title of “World’s Largest Store” extremely serious.

WAHOOOIEY – those kind of numbers can really excite a girl with an appreciation for all things fashion!

Unknown-2

Tory Burch is going after the counterfeiters in a big bad way!  Apparently learning of the fakes directly from clients who were proudly displaying the big ol’ T’s around their necks, Tory Burch and her legal beagles are opening cases against a bunch of “industrial entrepreneurs” who are brazen enough to sell their knockoffs directly to trade shows and retailers, with orders amounting to thousands of dollars.  Tory is even going after retailers who bought from the companies who made the knockoffs!  reversecommuter thinks that is a little aggressive considering the store owner went to a show, placed an order and received the goods thinking they were legitimate.  Absolutely hit the counterfeiters but attacking the shop owner is a little wonky!

Find a body of water, slap on a fabulous fashionable hat, and enjoy the weekend!

PFW (Paris Fashion Week) bids adieu with lots of pretty frilly bits.  Those fabulous Parisians!

First up, obviously, Chanel

Yves Saint Laurent

This was the inaugural collection from Hedi Slimane for Yves Saint Laurent, and was highly anticipated.  The reviews were mixed but the main draw wasn’t the clothes it was the drama!  Hedi banned NYTimes Fashion journalist Cathy Horyn, got an open letter from Laura Craik (the Times of London fashion editor) which stated that Hedi should not treat journalists …”like a bitch”, and a lot of other journalists and fashion bloggers trashed both designer, and his designs.

OOOOH LALA!

Tory Burch and Christopher Burch are divorced, and he is suing her, and dirty laundry with a logo is all over the courts!

Christopher is a founder and one of the two largest shareholders of Tory Burch LLC (guess who the other one is?), and he has just launched C Wonder, a clothing line and boutique that some suggest has a slight resemblance to his ex-wife’s company and product line, only with a much lower price point.

Happy Long Weekend!

Smoking Bunnies

Smoking Slippers.  Who knew?  Comfort and style – LOVE!!!!!!!!!!

Buh-Bye Tory Burch flats.  The BIG DOGS are taking this over and doing it OH SO RIGHT!

Alexander McQueen – does it get any better than this?!

Jimmy Choo

Ralph Lauren

Stubbs & Wotton – the classic from Palm Beach (need I say more?)

Slip on the smoking slippers when running to catch the school bus…

not that the bunny face slippers aren’t cute in their own way.

No need to “Wotton” anymore, just click the pictures, be taken to the website and buy! (excluding the bunny slippers – reversecommuter cannot encourage that kind of behavior).

P.S. reversecommuter grabbed her smoking slippers at Zara for a whopping $49.00

Petals and PJs

Prints and p.j.’s look to be staying around for a little bit – or so say the new Resort 2012/2013 collections.

Marc Jacobs is a master on both and I am LOVING his resort, as seen on Moda Operandi  (another true love of mine).

Resort Collections are a funny breed – not as serious an investment as the Fall Collections yet more quirky than the Spring Collections, and smaller in quantity than either as well.

The influences this year have been the Amalfi Coast (Tory Burch), Flora Patterns (Gucci), and my favorite influence, a search for “great, wearable clothes”, (Proenza Schouler), because who doesn’t want that?

Start saving those pennies for your winter vacation wardrobe, because the designers have definitely brought their game!  Or…..the other fun option is to hit the current Spring 2012 sales (everyone is on sale right now) and invest in the petals and pi’s that are discounted!
